EXHIBITION DESIGN FOR
BOAT BUILDERS OF AUSTRALIA

Boat Builders of Australia was an exhibition part of the 2023 Australian Wooden Boat Festival and sponsored by the Australian National Maritime Museum. It highlights a small selection of the many boat builders and designers of Australia. The focus was on the beautifully crafted vessels on display during the festival.

The age of the vessels featured in the exhibition varied from over 100 years old to relatively recent. We chose to highlight this by creating a modern interpretation of traditional design. Fonts from different eras were put together, giving a sense the of time passed between the creation of different vessels. The background uses halftone patterns from the days before digital printing. And each panel is finished off with a vintage-inspired border.

The center display featured a 12-foot sailing dinghy believed to have been built in 1939. Around the dinghy, 5 information panels are placed, walking visitors through the history of the vessel.

Inside the dinghy on display visitors found a panel explaining all the parts of a boat. Their nautical term and a detailed description. Each accompanied by a number found around the vessel.

Two of the six panels found along the walls of the exhibition, showcasing a list of the traditionally built wooden vessels on display around the festival.
